Combining powers of trance and minimal techno to create mysterious, sweet melodies neo trance became an extremely contemporary and progressively trendier genre.
Germany has been a birth place to a lot of the ground-breaking producers in the neo trance genre, such as Extrawelt, Dominik Eulberg and Stephan Bodzin.
Since early years of XXI century micro (minimal) house was born out of backlash to increasingly heavier basslines, massive drums and excessively over compressed production. At the same time the minimal genre gradually started to influence other styles, like breaks and drum ‘n’ bass, it was trance that was possibly the most willing to change. With the time, several tech house and minimal techno artists began to explore longer, more trance sounding melodies, and increasingly more trance artists began to scale down and refine their productions, a totally fresh style surfaced: neo trance.
The neo trance music has its roots in techno and minimal genres, and, at the same time, it adds breakdowns and melodic lines to bring the tracks into the neo-trance realms.
The sound of neo trance fits in the middle between techno and trance. It usually has a darker feel to it and is not as much ecstatic as club trance. However it sounds more melodic than techno, and, typically, it keeps trance’s common breakdowns and arrangements. Neo-trance genre tends to utilize deeper and, at times, more evocative lyrics than trance.
Currently there is a significant crossover among neo trance and, for example, minimal techno, tech house and progressive house, with well known international producers making usual detours into neo trance region including, between others, Trentemøller, Nathan Fake, James Holden and Deadmou5 (aka Joel Zimmerman).

Pantha Du Prince topped the chart with the gold.
James Holden came silver second.
Extrawelt and Trentemøller equally share the bronze medal. OK, I'll make two third medals.
