Oh, I could run a bar-code-reader over a deep house dancer..

Groovy, hooky house genre impregnated with a good amount of soul..

The expression deep house is already a strange affair in itself, considering that when it started to appear in the late 1980s, all house music was deep, Chicago house deep.

Deep house is a style of house music that combines essential parts of Chicago house and the 1980s jazz-funk and mixes it with a healthy amount of soul music.

Sonic characteristics of deep house comprise of soulful vocals, unhurried and intense dissonant melodies, classy and elegant performance.

Classic early house compositions from late 1980s, such as Frankie Knuckles presents Satoshi Tomiie’s Tears, Night Writers' Let The Music (Use You), and Mr. Fingers’ Can You Feel It, fused powerful steady grooves with minimalist production and expressive, musical sensitivity. The jazz music influences were, for the most part, brought out by incorporating extended, altered chords which are held for relatively long time and gave tracks a dissonant quality to some extent.

Afterward, at the beginning of the 1990s, deep house compositions were deeply influenced by disco as well and even fused into a questionable disco house style. Basically, by the mid 90s, deep house became a mainstream style.

House’s mainstream reputation roared and a sturdy flow of sub-styles began to emerge, however, the deep house came to mainly identify its  minimal or soulful part. The term 'deep house' is, without a doubt, a fitting umbrella for combining together everything from considerate minimal offerings of Jay Tripwire to the chilled tracks of Charles Webster.

The inclusion of vocal tracks became even more widespread in deep house than in various other genres of house.

The main attributes in a real deep house are a strong groove and an expressive hook without being excessively over-the-top. A lot of deep house compositions have many layers, yet they appear to sound more minimal than they essentially are. Deep house also lends itself well for the combining of acoustic and electronic instruments, even without mentioning the vocals.

I conducted a survey during April on Last.fm, Twitter, Facebook, SoundCloud and my personal musician's list to determine the best deep house artists and here's the combined result of that quest:

  1.  Milton Jackson found ahead of the deep crop.

  2.  The Timewriter followed the track.

  3.  It's actually a tie between Frankie Knuckles and Louie Vega.

deep-jackson  Milton Jackson is house producer from Scotland. His Crash album (on Freerange label) was released in 2009 and immediately put his name on a lot of dance floors around the world..

deep-timewriter  Tiefenschoen is The Timewriter 2010 release on Plastic City label.

deep-knuckles Frankie Knuckles managed to become the very first Grammy Award recipient for Dance Remixer of the Year. Motivation Too is his 2009 release, issued on Nervous Records label. Frankie is the legend and rightfully so.

I wish you would breathe all over those deep house classics..

River Ocean feat. India - Love & Happiness (Yemaya Y Ochùn)

This is an old school deep house song. With overwhelming lush strings and Latin drums, Love & Happiness convincing us that deep house isn’t only about chilling. Classic Louie Vega masterpiece has been remixed numerous times, but the original version from 1994 still sounds excellent by today standards.

Atjazz & Mr J - Together (Feat. Mr J)

Check out how dissonant chords and haunting riffs seamlessly work together. Trading four-on-the-floor rhythm for the mass of lo-fi samples, this down tempo track is in itself a lesson on synthesizers. The simple bass line makes the entire track grooving, and don’t you forget about Mr J’s expressive vocal treatment. Atjazz is aka Martin Iveson.

Global Communication - The Groove

The Groove combines funky electric bass with delicate electric piano chords, lush, cascading synths and rolling beats. The chill-out super duo of Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard, just prior of taking their own separate ways, put aside their signature ambience to dive into this remarkable detour from familiar soundscape.

I:Cube - Pazuzu

A lot of delay and filter modulation, together with a groovy bass and a delicate arpeggio lines occupy this synth-laden offer from the French producer with excellent sense of humor and a serious amount of soul.

Down the page you'll find the list of the artists who made the deep house list.
